Lajtabansag (Ugric Lajtabánság, German Leithabanat, Leitha-Banschaft) is a Hungarian state formation that arose after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy on the territory of the modern Austrian federal state of Burgenland and the Hungarian city of Sopron. According to the Hungarian side, there were no prerequisites for the Austrian capture and integration of Burgenland. It has been argued that the fertile lands of Burgenland had been Hungarian royal possessions for centuries. Burgenland was only partially Germanized due to Austrian influence, and the native ancestors of its inhabitants were Hungarians sent to defend the Hungarian borderlands. Before the Treaty of Trianon, Burgenland was part of Hungary. In the autumn of 1921, the Hungarian lieutenant colonel Pal Pronai, at the head of the Rongyos Gárda militia, which was formed from anti-communists after the collapse of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, mainly from peasants, students and demobilized soldiers, opposed the transfer of western Hungarian territories to Austria. By mid-September 1921, "Rongyos Gárda", by that time already numbering 3500-4000 people, took control of the territory of Western Hungary. On October 4, 1921, the creation of the independent state of Laitabansag was proclaimed. The territory of the state covered almost all the disputed territories claimed by Austria and Hungary. The situation with the creation of a new state was unfavorable for both the Republic of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary, which prompted them to negotiate to solve this problem at the diplomatic level. At the talks, agreements were reached on a referendum of the population, at which the territorial affiliation of the disputed territories should be decided. As a result of the referendum, Sopron went to the Kingdom of Hungary, while the other territory of Burgenland remained part of the Republic of Austria.
