This small member of the pea family thrives in almost any soil as long as it is well drained and in full sun or partial shade. It is hardy in climates that range from 5a to 11 but seems to do better in northern regions. Well suited for urban parks and gardens, the 8-inch flower clusters make particularly wonderful overhangs for paths and walkways. At maturity it will stand about 20-30 feet. Considered to be a small deciduous tree, shrub border or hedge, train for arbors, and pergolas. Good background plant! Its light green foliage is susceptible to sunburn during hot summer days and the flower buds will be damaged if caught by a late spring frost. This species is not to be confused with the Cassia Fistula which grows more in tropical regions.Its seeds germinate easily, and it can also be propagated by layering or grafting. Care must be taken when applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides around Golden Chain Trees, as they are reported to be sensitive to a number of toxins.
