Description: This is a La Pietà Sacred Heart Last Rites Box Catholic Shrine Altar Oak Viaticum Shadow Box! An antique, circa 1910, Catholic Eucharist (also called Holy Communion) sick call wooden shadow box, used to give a person who is dying last rites in the Catholic religion. This early 20th century icon for Catholic homes features a solid oak framed shadow box wall niche, flanking a chalkware La Pietà sculpture of Jesus and Mary set behind reverse painted glass panel with rich polychrome decorated religious symbols and imagery around the border. The bottom panel with oak framed depictions of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary drops down to form an altar or shelf, and reveals an interior compartment, which can hold various items used during the sacrament of last rites such as a bottle of Holy Water, a Crucifix, Paten, spoon, etc. The original Paten and spoon are included, there is no bottle of Holy Water or Crucifix. Good original antique condition. Presents well, enhanced by nicely aged patina and warm antique oak glow. Wear and tear consistent with age and indicative of use. Missing pieces, such as the Holy Water bottle and Crucifix can be purchased in several ways to complete the case, scattered minor imperfections such as light scuffs, scratches, nicks and discoloration on the metal. Overall a wonderful example of religious folk art, ecclesiastical antiques and decorative arts. Approximate dimensions: 23" High, 18" Wide, 3" Deep Just as pictured.
