Carved Wood , Animal Fur , Metal and Textile. 11” x 8” x 3” An extraordinary mask with significant age. Animal fur at Lip , Metal fittings around eyes, Metal teeth. Encrusted textile and leather headdress. The Guere, sometimes called the Krahn or We, are an indigenous African people that inhabit areas in eastern Liberia and western Côte d'Ivoire. Guere masks are potent symbols, believed to connect wearers with ancestors and spirits, particularly the Dan Guere mask inhabited by a deceased warrior's spirit. Expert dancers channel the spirit's wisdom during ceremonies. Alongside the Wee and Kran masks uséd in various rites, these masks represent the profound spiritual ties of the Dan people. Their cultural richness extends to music, dance, and clothing, proudly preserved and celebrated across generations.
