After fulfilling their lifelong dream of performing at New York's Madison Square Garden, the band marched on to new triumphs. Japan was their next stop. Ever since the 1974 release of Hotter Than Hell, the album cover of which was unmistakably influenced by aspects of Japanese culture, Japan had been clamoring for inclusion in a worldwide KISS tour. Ace Frehley, Paul Stanley. Peter Criss, and Gene Simmons, with their unrelenting rock n' roll wrath, succumbed four Japanese cities in less than a week. Drawing 40,000 fans and breaking attendance records set by the Beatles more than a decade earlier, KISS knew they had won life's ultimate lottery. They responded to Japan's passionate welcome by giving the most explosive stage show the world had ever seen. Traveling on their own Pan Am 747 Clipper KISS Special (with a larger-than-life KISS logo embossed on its side), KISS came home to the United Stores as international superstars. Less than a month after finishing their Japanese tour, KISS went back to New York City’s Record Plant to work on a new album, with Eddie Kramer as co-producer. Kramer, who hod created an ultra-powered, fiery hot sound with Rock And Roll Over, was fast becoming KISS' preeminent producer. The band wanted their seventh album to be in harmony with its predecessor but with an added spice, an added "bang." Stanley and Simmons, both of whom had already recorded demos of "Love Gun," "Got Love For Sale," and Christine Sixteen" for the album, collaborated with Criss and Frehley to generate some of their best material ever. For the first time, Frehley contributed his vocal talents to a KISS recording: the track "Shock Me." This song, combined wirt Perer Criss' ’Hooligan," made Love Gun the first KISS album to include all four members on lead vocals, and added on extra dimension to the band's unity. Shortly before Love Gun was completed, a nationwide poll conducted by the Gallup Youth Survey indicated that KISS was the #1 rock band in America, beating the Eagles, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin in popularity. Nothing better reflected this popularity than the public response to Love Gun: With preorders exceeding one million units, Love Gun was the second KISS album to earn Platinum status even before it hit record store shelves (the first was Rock And Roll Over) ! On June 30, 1977, the same day Love Gun was released, Marvel Comics shipped its first official comic book. Unlike most comics that use ordinary ink, KISS comic book used red ink literally infused with human blood: KISS poured vials of their own blood into the ink before the issue went to press. Promoted as "The Sight of Blood," the issue sold over 800,000 copies and quickly became one of the company's best-selling comic books ever. Love Gun, containing such ear-grinding tunes as ”I Stole Your Love" and "Almost Human,” entered Record World's Top 100 chart. Teamed with Rock And Roll Over, Destroyer, and Alive!, it distinguished KISS as the first band in history to have four albums on the charts at the same time. Less than a month after Love Gun's release, KISS began touring Canada and America with three new albums’ worth of killer material, brand-new costumes and special effects, a stage that dwarfed their earlier Destroyer set, and a massive arsenal of gloss and chrome equipment. Knowing that their next album should reflect the staggering musical and visual growth of the bond, KISS made plans to record their upcoming three-day performance at the Los Angeles Forum. Their goal was to assemble a new collection of live material—to produce a sequel to Alive!. There was no stopping the KISS machine now. ~ Robert V.
