Description: Mithradates VI Eupator | AE22 (Brass) Reference: SNG BMC 1189 Date: 85-65 BCE Obverse: Aegis with facing Gorgon in the center Reverse: AMIΣOY, Nike walking right, holding palm over shoulder with both hands. ΦΠA monogram in left field, ΔAT monogram in lower right Mint: Amisos, Pontos Size: 22.1 mm Weight: 6.53 grams BEAUTIFUL BLUE PATINA. A very nice bronze coin from the Anatolian city of Amisos struck during the reign of Rome's arch-nemesis, Mithradates VI. Brass (copper and zinc) is an alloy that was used relatively rarely in ancient times. This was due to the difficulty of extracting zinc from ores containing other metals . For a metal, zinc has a very low boiling point (1665 F), so furnaces that were hot enough to melt copper (1984 F) or iron (2800 F) would effectively vaporize any zinc present in the ore. Phrygia is the only region with a consistent, recorded use of brass coinage in the pre-Roman period, and the alloy is heavily featured in coinage pf Pontos. The blue patina on this coin is relatively rare on cuperous coinage in general, but seems to be more common on brassy issues. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
