Description: Kholui Russian lacquered box Painted by talent Russian artist Rubakova. SIZE: 4x1.5The box is constructed from papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a brilliant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition. Inside the lid is additional artwork with the signature, title, and date. Kholui is rural settlement in the Ivanonva Oblast. The Kholui school is a diamond in the rough and produces some of the finest artists on the planet! The lacquer boxes made here are similar to Palekh in materials. They are constructed from tempera paints and painted on papier-mâché boxes. Once the painting is complete the boxes are lacquered and polished many times to create the fine finish that all of the Russian lacquer boxes have in common. The Kholui school was originally opened for Russian Icon Painting in the late 1800’s. However, a group of artists opened a workshop on painting miniature lacquer art. In 1943 a new Kholui school was opened! If you have any questions or need more pictures, fell free to contact me.
