However, due to an unsuccessful Russian campaign in 1708/1709, he put his country on the defensive. In 1718 he fell in Norway at the siege of Frederikshald. In the end, Sweden lost its position as a major power in Europe, primarily in favor of the emerging Russia. Karl's parents were the Swedish King Charles XI. and Ulrike Eleonore, daughter of the Danish King Frederick III.
