Kampfschwimmer vintage 1944 Italian navy 3646 homage ETA 6497 clone 45mm watch

Description: Kampfschwimmer homage Towards the end of WWII, German frogmen were trained in Italy by the Italian navy. In 1944 they were issued with ref. 3646 waterproof watches, made by Giuseppe Panerai in collaboration with Rolex and featuring Cortebert movements. By the last batch, Panerai had run out of sandwich dials, so they were fitted with Rolex 'error-proof' dials (half-Roman, half-Arabic, designed for improved visibility in low-light conditions and patented in 1942). It was only much later that these became referred to as 'California' dials. The last photo shows an original 1944 ref. 3646, now worth a small fortune. This is a custom build from a year or so ago, driven by a Unitas 6497 clone movement without the seconds hand. It is keeping time to within a few seconds a day face-up on the bench.
