Signed, dated and titled in pencil at the lower margin, starting from left to right "30/50" " "To Taste Eternity: Beyond Herself "" "Downey 66" Juan Downey (Santiago, Chile, 1940- New York, NY, 1993) Chilean artist, one of pioneers of video art, he created an extensive body of work that also includes electronic and video sculptures, photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, performance, installation, and writing. His work worked with the ideas of energy, environment, and unrepresented people. Most of his artistic practice was done in NY where he lived from the late 1960s until his death. Ha taught at Pratt from 1970-1993. His work is extensively collected by major museums and art collectors, featured at the major international biennials, and there has been a keen interest in his artistic practice in the last few years, with curators and museums acquiring his work and researching his artistic practice and the reverberations that his work has had on future generations.
