Description: Antique (pre-1917) J. R. Torrey straight razor - shave ready. This is a very clean antique straight razor, with blade and scales in great condition. The blade is a 5/8 half hollow grind, with a barber's notch. It has been bevel set, honed, polished on a 12k stone, stropped, and shave tested so as to give a very satisfying shaving experience. The J.R. Torrey Razor Company (located in Worcester MA) manufactured straight razors from about 1850 to 1952. They at one time were the largest straight razor manufacturer in the U.S. and supplied the U.S. military with their straight razors. The J.R. Torrey Razor Company was one of the most respected and successful straight razor manufacturers in existence. Own a piece of history! This razor would be a fantastic addition to any collection or as use as a daily shaver. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I take pride in the straight razors that I sell. Many razors being sold on eBay as shave ready are simply NOT shave ready. Shave ready does not mean sharp, it does not mean open the razor, strop it, and shave. To me, shave ready means that the razor will give a close, comfortable, and satisfying shave right out of the box–no touching up or stropping is needed before your initial shave. I personally shave-test each and every razor before putting any one up for sale. I set the bevel (if necessary) on a 1k stone and work through a progression of 4k and 8k stones. Each razor is then polished on a 12k stone, stropped, and shave tested. Only when I am satisfied that the razor gives a close, comfortable, and satisfying shave will I even consider selling. For those who appreciate the process of razor restoration, here is how I first prepare a razor for public sale: Depending on the original condition of the blade, I go through a sanding progression from 320 grit wet/dry paper through 2500 grit paper. I then polish on a low speed buffing wheel with a progression of black, green, and white buffing compound. After that the blades are hand polished with a liquid buffing compound. At this point, the razor is ready for honing. I want my buyers to be happy with the antique straight razors I meticulously restore. If you are not happy with your purchase, please contact me immediately and I will rectify the situation.
