Baron (Freiherr) Joseph Franz (József Ferenc) von Goez (1754 Hermannstadt, Romania - 1815 Regensburg, Germany) was attracted to the arts from his youth. Initially he studied law and occupied a civil servant's position in Vienna until 1779. During this time he also studied art and painted portraits in oils, gouaches and miniatures, at first in Vienna, and then in Munich and Augsburg. In 1772, he became a student of the copper engraving department of the Vienna Academy, and during his busy life he was involved in stage decoration, portrait painting, and illustrating literary works. From 1779 he lived in Munich, then in Augsburg and Regensburg. He also worked as a writer, and in 1791 he was arrested as a freemason. He is a characteristic figure of the Age of Enlightenment, a versatile representative and documenter of the contradictory artistic endeavors that unfolded at the end of the 18th century. Relatively few memories of his artistic activity remain: series of drawings with acting expressions ("Versuch einer zährlichen Folge leidenschaftlicher Entwürfe für empfindsame Kunst- und Schauspielfreunde", 1784), miniature portraits of the actors, oil paintings depicting Shakespeare plays. With its simple beauty and honesty, the self-portrait pIn Augsburg von Goez published several collections of engravings. From 1791 he settled in Regensburg. The artist signed his works "Goez" (sic!) or "Goetz".
