Horace Bushnell Memorial Hall, March 28-31, 1942, The catholic Mission Aid Society presents, The Original Black Hills Passion Play with Josef Meir as "The Christus". Josef Meier (1905-1999) was a German-born playwright, producer, director and performer who is most famous for Passion Play, which he brought from Germany to America in 1932. Starring as "The Christus", Meier was the 7th generation of his family to portray Jesus in the drama. Though Passion Play toured from 1932 to 1964, Meier established a permanent theatre in Spearfish, South Dakota in 1939. He retired from the role in 1991 after over 9,000 performances. He is the recipient of the National Freedom Foundation Award and the Bundesverdienstkreuz, the highest civilian award given by the German Government.
