A fine copy. as new. Betulia liberata, for four voices, strings, two oboes, two horns and basso continuo, was the second oratorio by Niccolò Jommelli (1714-1774), following Isacco figura del Redentore. It was composed in 1743 to a commission from the Fathers of the Congregation of the Oratorio of Saint Philip Neri, and was widely performed in Italy throughout the 18th century, as well as in Prague and in London. Metastasio’s text, originally commissioned by Emperor Charles VI and set by Georg Reutter the younger in 1734, proved popular with other composers, and was subsequently set by as many as 30 composers, including Niccolò Jommelli (1743), Ignaz Holzbauer (1752), Leopold Kozeluch (1780), Joseph Schuster (1787), Antonio Salieri (1821), and most famously Mozart (1771). The Mozart is the best known, if only because it is Mozart. Composed in March to July 1771 when Mozart was 15 years old, the only oratorio Mozart ever wrote, it was not performed in Mozart's lifetime. Jommelli’s version is one of the most felicitous on account of its impact, variety and consistent inventiveness, and also for the care he took in matching the music to the drama. Both the Mozart and the Jommelli drew attention in 2010 when they were performed side-by-side at the Salzburg Whitsun and Ravenna festivals under the leadership of Riccardo Muti.
