McGee302 F.S. - 1944 Signers biography is included I was at Charles McGee’s signing for the paper print edition of “Safe Passage Home”. I received this canvas giclee for assisting with the signing. General McGee was kind enough to sign this canvas giclee in the lower left corner. I have attached a photo of General McGee signing the canvas as proof of the signature. It’s a one-of-a-kind item. Known as the “Red Tails,” the famed ‘Tuskegee Airmen’ were the first all-black fighter squadrons to fly combat in World War II. They were especially known for their unequaled record of safely protecting their bombers on escort missions, often being specifically requested for this duty by the bomber crews themselves, providing a safe passage home. This scene depicts Mustangs of the 302nd FS escorting B-24s of the 459th Bomb Group back to their base in Italy after a daylight bombing mission during the summer of 1944, with Lt Charles McGee flying his P-51C “Kitten” in the foreground. The main B-24 shown (“Cherokee Maiden”) was part of the 756th Squadron, and brought several crews safely home over the course of many missions, ultimately ending its wartime career in April, 1945. During the course of creating the painting, it was a privilege for artist John Shaw to consult with Brigadier General McGee of the Tuskegee Airmen and with two of Cherokee Maiden’s gunners, who vividly recalled combat missions in which they shared the skies with the Red Tails during those tumultuous days in the skies over Europe. Your canvas will need to be stretched for framing. Any framer should be able to do this and it is inexpensive. It’s straightforward to do. The traditional way is to get four correctly sized stretcher bars, a pair of canvas pliers, and a small hand staple gun. If you wanted to do this for yourself, the pliers & staple gun might cost about $30, and the stretcher bars vary in cost by size, averaging around $20 to $30 for a medium to large canvas. These items are readily available at an arts & crafts store. Framing a canvas giclee is generally a lot less expensive than framing a paper print - no glass, mats, foamcore and a lot less labor.
