This set from the law library of Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart -- prominent Staunton lawyer who served as Interior Secretary under Millard Fillmore as well as in the Virginia Senate. He was a member of the Virginia state secession convention in 1861. His signature is on the spine of each volume, as well as on the front pastedown of each volume. Stuart died in 1891 after serving as Rector of the University of Virginia and as President of the Virginia Historical Society. He is buried in Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.
