Simcoe, though bred in the Navy,and highly efteemed as an excellent offi-cer, was however peculiarly partial to themilitary fervice, and is faid to have leftbehind him a valuable treatise on Tacticsin that profeffion. The moft ftriking oc-currence of his life aroſe, however, froman accident, improved in a manner pecu-liar to Genius and extensive profeffionalknowledge. He was taken prifoner inAmerica, and carried up the River St. Law-rence. As his character was little known,he was watched only to prevent his ef-Captain, afterwards Major, Drewe diftin-guiſhed himself' at the head of the lightinfantry of that regiment. He foon after-wards acted as adjutant of the 35th, forwe believe he never was actually appointedto this office; and at no diftant periodpurchased a company in the 40th, whichhe commanded at the battle of Brandywine, where he was wounded. GeneralSimcoe was always a foldier in his heart,and attentive to every part of his duty.He already faw, that regularity in the in-terior economy of a foldier's life contri-buted to his health, and estimated the at-tention of the inferior officers by theftrength of a company or a regiment inthe field. Whatever may have been hiopinion of parade duty, he must havbeen intimately attentive to its minuteconcerns, since he acted with credit arability as adjutant in a regiment ſo pecliarly minute and exact as the 35th, whea martinet fo ftrict as Col.
