Description: I have for sale a John Charles Fremont medal that referrers to his 1856 Presidential campaign. The medal is made of white metal, it is 2 1/4 inches in diameter and in uncirculated condition but does have three spots in the obverse field, see photos. John Fremont was an American explorer, military officer and a politician. At one time he was a senator from California and the republican nominee for president in 1856, but he lost that election to James Buchanan. The medal obverse shows the raised bust of FREMONT and at the rim it reads COL. JOHN C. FREMONT, BORN JAN. 21st 1813. Under the bust in tiny letters it reads PAQUET, NEW YORK. The reverse inside a wreath, reads, "THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS ECHO BACK FREMONT" - THE - PEOPLES - CHOICE - FOR - 1856 - "CONSTITUTIONAL - FREEDOM" At the very bottom on a ribbon in the wreath it has the words MEN - FREE - SOIL. This white metal medal was not struck at the U.S. mint. It was only struck in bronze at the U.S. mint.
