Description: Early original vintage cabinet card photograph of notable New York City Commissioner John E. Eustis. John E. Eustis of New York city as born in Limerick, -Jefferson County, New York, When 17 years of age Mr. Eustis enlisted in the Twentieth New York Cavalry, Troop N, and Was a member of that organization two years. Upon his return home he entered the classes of Wesleyan University, dealing with scientific subjects. Graduating in 1874 he went to New York and there was appointed City Surveyor during the administration of Mayor A. Oakley Hall. In 1875 he began the study of law in the Dwight ‘Law School and also became an employee of Olin, Rives & Montgomery. He was graduated by the law school in 1877 and he began to practice law under his own name in 1880. Then he was appointed a school trustee of the Twenty-fourth ward of New York, which he continued to hold until 1885. He was appointed a school inspector and held the position for five years. He became a Commissioner of the Board of Education of New York in 1896, and Park Commissioner for the Bronx, city of New York, in 1902, holding the position until the end of 1903. When appointed Public Service Commissioner Mr. Eustis was vice-president of the Citizens’ Union of New York, and a member of the following bodies of New York: Bronx \Vest Side Association, West Side Board of Trade, Bronx Bar Association of New York county, the Republican Club, Civic League, and Lafayette Post. G. A. R. Cabinet Card photograph measures 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches and is in excellent condition with no bends, tears, or creases and is very sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity.
