One of 300 copies, folio size, 102 pp. Fine. Paper - and its importance in fine printing. This work explores the many papers commissioned and used by the Oxford University Press, which played an important part in the typographical revival of the 1920s. "Over the years the Press accumulated an impressive supply of vintage hand-made and mould-made papers in pristine condition, vigilantly preserved until 1986, when the Press was phasing out its letterpress facilities and reallocated the warehouse space for other purposes" (from the book's Introduction). The paper eventually came into possession of The Whittington Press, who decided "to publish a complete historical account of the collection, accompanied with forty original specimens to show the physical characteristics and the identifying features of fine papers used at Oxford between 1900 and 1970". ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter green cloth over green laid paper boards with a cloth fore-edge, fore- and bottom edges uncut, light tan laid paper endpapers, title page in brown and black, text is followed by specimens tipped onto thick black laid paper; Centaur type, printed on Zerkall mould-made paper and half-bound with Fabriano Roma paper, folio size (15" by 10 3/4"), pagination: [i-x], [1] 2-85, [1, blank], [1,colophon], [5 blank pages] followed by 42 leaves containing 40 specimens; limited edition of 300 total, this copy no. 77.
