HISTORY OF THE JESSE JAMES BELT BUCKLE This is a Limited-Edition belt buckle dramatizing an event in the outlaw life of Jesse James. The Kearney Lions Club issued Limited Edition Commemorative Brass Belt Buckles each year for a period of 10 years during the 1980’s. Only 1000 to 1500issued per year. They are individually numbered and includes the Lions Club information about the event on the back of the buckle. The outlaw Jesse James grew up near Kearney, Missouri which is located approximately along day’s horseback ride northeast of Kansas City Missouri. I had a vinyl siding production business located in Kearney from 1979 until I sold it in 1986.It is still producing vinyl siding today. Folklore has Jesse portrayed as a Robinhood although there is nothing to validate the fact. Jesse was protected by the local citizens as his gang robbed banks and trains which the public generally hated because they were taking land for railroads and banks were foreclosing on the small farms. Jesse is buried in the cemetery near downtown Kearney, he was originally buried on the farm near the James home where souvenir hunters chipped away at the headstone until it was nearly destroyed. There was much controversy concerning whether it was really Jesse buried in the grave. My father was acquainted with an old man that claimed he knew Jesse and he swore it was not Jesse that was buried in the grave. In 1995 the question was settled when his grave was opened, and DNA tests proved the body was related to a living relative.I have asked people from other countries and they all have heard of him. The James farm home is now a museum located only 3 or 4 miles from downtown Kearney. I made several visits over the years as it was a favorite place to take out of town customers and suppliers.More info about the farm can be obtained at and http://www.legendsofamerica.com/mo-jamesattractions.html The Friends of the James Farm (FOJF) exists to support and help preserve the birthplace of Jesse James. www.jessejames.org.
