Excellent condition Jerry Uelsmann (1934 – 2022) was a surrealist photographer best known for his pioneering photomontages and experimental darkroom work. Originally from Detroit, Uelsmann attended the Rochester Institute of Technology for his BFA and the University of Indiana for his MFA. Ueslmann is best known for creating cutting-edge composite images made up of his own previously captured negatives. Compositing of this nature gave Uelsmann’s work a dreamlike sensibility heavy with allegory which challenged traditional photorealism and standard printing processes. Uelsmann’s coined “Post-Visualization” to describe his style of photomontage. The printing process of his Post-Visualization style was itself a pioneering contribution to photography. Numerous enlargers, overlaying old negatives with refined masking and diffusion techniques, this process was far ahead of its time. These experimentations of the mechanical and chemical were never overanalyzed by Ueslmann, though. His process was always emotionally intuitive, focused more so on resonant imagery than technical mastery. Uelsmann taught on and off at the University of Florida from 1960 until 1998, along with hosting a number of workshops on Post-Visualization. His accumulated awards and grants include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment, the Royal Photographic Society Fellowship and a Lucie Award. At the age of 87, Uelsmann passed away at his home in Gainesville, Florida.
