Description: Lovely French Porcelain candelabra, created by Jean Gilles, 1850-1899.Jean Gilles was an excellent French porcelain artist in the second half of the 1800s. The figural Candelabra offered here is in very good to excellent condition. The figures, male and female, appear to have different interests. Specifically, the young woman seems quite attracted to the young man, a dreamy expression on her face expressive of her admiration for the young man. Whereas for his part, books hold his dreams at present. Thus, unrequited love is the theme, yet the candelabra is not desperate or tragic in appearance. Rather, there is promise in beautiful pastel colors Jean Gilles used, espeially the predominating pink of harmony in relationship, as well of course in the fair features and figures of the pair, There is clearly the suggestion that should the young man raise his eyes, he will find passion and happiness upon making the acquaintance of the lovely young woman. A romantic wistful theme to be sure. Over the past decade or two searching and collecting Jean Gilles' pieces, I've found no other example of this particular work. Yet it is clearly among his finer creations. The condition is very good. The young man has damage to one hand, and there is a looseness between the figural and candlestick feature of the piece. The candlestick portion therefore moves inside the bottom portion. It is therefore important to take care when moving it from one place to another. The dimensions are: 8" tall, 6" wide and 3.5" - 4" deep. The interior base of both bears the green anchor mark attributed to Jean Gilles.
