Description: Intricately hand cut Japanese katagami from Kyoto. These were primarily used for placing a design on kimono cloth. They would have been cut by hand with the makers sometimes making their knife for some of the smaller intricate cuts. Look closely and you can see the silk threads attached to the paper to reinforce the cut design. The paper is Japanese washi paper made from mulberry. The brown color is from the paper being soaked in a persimmon tannin to resist the dyes being used. We show both sides of the paper in these photo. The side that's a darker color is the side with the silk threads attached with a thin layer of rice paste. We believe these and the others we have listed were from the early 1900's. (There were newspapers from the 1930's amongst some of them.)
