Description: Japanese collectible Maiko doll made in Kyoto around the 1950s, representing a beautiful young maiko (apprentice geisha) girl dressed in an artistically hand-embroidered red silk kimono with very long sleeves (symbol of an unmarried woman) and decorated with peony and chrysanthemum motifs, and a silk brocade gold-orange obi sash tied only in the maiko style with long wings that hang almost to the ground. Her exquisite top kimono is tucked under a red rope sash (obijime) that adorns her obi sash in the front, revealing her simple red silk under kimono. Maiko's black wooden high sandals - pokkuri (symbol of virginity) are hand-painted with sakura flowers. Her Edo-style hairdo is decorated with silk flowers, a metal bira-bira with pendants, hairpins and a silk scarf.
