Description: The Great East Asia War Medal (Daitōa sensō jūgun kishō 大東亜戦争従軍記章) was created on June 21, 1944 by Imperial Edict No. 417. While a number of them were minted during the war, a handful were purportedly awarded, and the stockpile of not awarded medals was destroyed by occupying forces. As a result, from 1960 to 1980s a number of replicas were minted by private companies, and sold to veterans that would be eligible to receive them. Such copies are of varying quality, boxes are paulownia, resin or lacquer. This one is one of the better replicas, without changes to original design, Base metal. Date: 1970s Box: black resin with gold gilt letters: The Great East Asia War Medal (Daitōa sensō jūgun kishō 大東亜戦争従軍記章) ). Inside purple silk on the lid and purple felt covered insert. Condition: Medal slightly tarnished and oxidixed. Ribbon with miniscule doscoloration and soiling. Box: minor scratches, one tiny area of purple silk inside. Reference: James W.
