Description: Japanese Kutani Moriage Dragonware Tea Set. Beautiful & Antique c.1921 – 1940 (Pre WWII) 22k Gold Trim Teaset Interesting to note that the Tea Set is also a Coffee Set as the shape and size suggests Dragonware is Japanese export porcelain decorated with dragons in a technique called moriage meaning "raised enamels". The effect has by some authors been likened to cake frosting. Dragonware dates from around the 1880s and later. This set made in the period c.1921 to about 1940 (pre WWII) It is export souvenir ware. There are no maker’s marks. It has no Geisha lithophanes. Note that Moriage is not always Dragonware, but true Dragonware is always Moriage. The Moriage of the twentieth century was intended for the export market as part of “fancy” ware destined for the United States. This came about after a dismal showing at the 1893 World Exposition in Chicago. Japanese decorative arts simply didn’t sell, hence the introduction of Dragonware into the Western markets where it became popular and collectable. Measurements: Teapot 18cm high with lid by 18cm spout to handle. Milk Jug 8cm high by 11cm spout to handle. Sugar 11cm high with lid by 13cm handle to handle. Saucers 11.8cm diameter. Cups 5.5cm high by 6.5cm diameter. Set Weight: 1540g. CONDITION: In perfect original condition and showing no wear except to the bases where there are slight markings indicating that the set has been moved from showcase to showcase. All Hand Painted as can be evidenced by slight discrepancies in the artist’s hand. Can be called ‘As New’ with no faults, cracks, chips, crazing or restoration.
