Description: This is a 12 piece set of Japanese coasters, used for tea or Sake. There is not a date upon this set. Subsequently, there is no way to concretely verify the date. That said, from the means it was carved (with slight variations), tells me it was truly hand made. The material and the patina of the aged wood is an indicator that these hail from the 1940's. There is the round storage box and 11 coasters. Both the round storage box and each of the 11 coasters have the image of Mt. Fuji carved into them. As already stated, this set was hand carved as each of the coasters are just a tiny bit different than the other. Some are just slightly larger in diameter or thicker. I don't believe that there are any missing coasters as the box is as full as possible and still close. That said, the storage box and the coasters are a set numbering 12 pieces. The knurling on the round box was obviously done by hand as it is just a little bit irregular. The beauty of this set is the hand made irregularity of the whole set. Each coaster is just a bit over 3 1/4 inches in diameter. The round storage box is 3 inches tall and 4 1/4 inches in diameter. The storage box was obviously turned on a wood lathe. This is a beautiful set. I would venture to say that you would be very hard pressed to find a surviving set so complete and in such good condition as what you see here. It is my guess that this set was likely brought home by a surviving service member following the close of WWII. Once again, there is no material way of proving that. As a collector of Japanese art, much of the antiques and paintings found in America, did in fact, come by means of military service members bringing them home following that great conflict. Shipping by: USPS., UPS., or FedEx., depending upon the delivery area. This set will be packaged very well for shipping.
