This Prayer beads is Tendai's one. Tendai is a school of Mahayana Buddhism in Japan, a descendant of the Chinese Tiantai or Lotus Sutra school. A center of Japanese Tendai "Enryaku-ji temple" is on Mount Hiei, Northern Kyoto. It's also famous as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Black Banded ebony wood, originating from Sulawesi (formerly Celebes) in central Indonesia, this timber is one of the rarest and most expensive timbers available worldwide. It is characterized by a distinctly striped wood pattern, with a fairly light-colored strip running roughly on dark brown or black ground. The scarcity is doubled by the fact that trees do not grow greatly. In Japan, Buddhists have Prayer beads (Juzu, Nenju). Kyoto is famous as a producing center of Prayer beads.
