Provenance: Purchased from the estate of a woman who traveled to Asia in 1938 as a quest of Japan and was traveling with the American Girls Softball Team. This letter was left in storage following her return from Manila in 1939. Original envelope included. Minor staining and paper loss to letter. Prince Kan'in Kotohito (, Kan'in-no-miya Kotohito-shinn, November 10, 1865 May 21, 1945) was the sixth head of a cadet branch of the Japanese imperial family, and a career army officer who served as Chief of the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff from 1931 to 1940. During his tenure as the Chief of the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff, the Imperial Japanese Army committed numerous war crimes against Chinese civilians including the Nanjing massacre and the systemic use of chemical and bacteriological weapons. Prince Kan'in Kotohito died several months before the end of the Second World War and was not tried for war crimes. Prince Tokugawa Iesato ( , August 24, 1863 June 5, 1940) was the first head of the Tokugawa clan after the overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate, and a significant figure in Japanese politics and diplomacy during the Meiji, Taish and early Shwa period Japan. When Prince Tokugawa traveled to other nations representing Japan during his diplomatic journeys, he usually presented his name as Prince Iyesato Tokugawa. Prince Tokugawa held the influential position of president of Japan's upper house of Congress the Diet for 30 years. Tokugawa promoted democratic principles and international goodwill. It was only after his passing in 1940 that Japanese militants were able to push Japan into joining the Axis Powers in WWII.
