Description: An example of Marcato's Sophia line of trumpets, developed out of a joint venture between Shimokura Gakki and Jupiter. Its spotlight feature are the monel valves, a nickel-copper alloy which allows the valves to be incredibly smooth while also being far more resistant to dirt and corrosion than typical plated-brass valves. Beyond the excellent valves, the two braces on the main tuning slide aid a lot with durability and with precision adjustment, the fixed saddle ring on the third slide is an excellent feature borrowed from higher-end horns and is comfortably-sized, and the case it comes with features metal feet to protect it from being damaged by rough floors such as concrete. Typically, these are sold only in Japan, but this one has been imported into the United States, and it is a great instrument for any student, any professional player who wants a lower-cost horn to supplement their normal expensive trumpets, as well as people who simply want odd things to add to their collection. Yes, it is marketed and intended as a student instrument, but it punches well above its price point and plays more like an intermediate horn such as a Yamaha 4335. The valves are truly fantastic, the horn is light and yet it has both a warm sound and excellent projection, and the particular combination of it and a heavy-weight mouthpiece make it into a truly respectable instrument. If all of the other Bb horns in my collection caught fire and I was left with only this trumpet, I would not be wholly despondent. There is a factory imperfection in the lacquer, a small scratch on the bell as photographed above, which is not entirely unexpected even amongst professional quality trumpets, but it is worth noting nonetheless. Otherwise, the instrument and its finish are in spectacular condition. Prior to packing and shipping, I will re-clean and re-oil the instrument to ensure that it performs its best even out of the box for its respective buyer.
