Description: You are bidding on an original antique engraving print from an 1860s illustrated journal. The print depicts Akashi Castle, a Japanese castle in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Akashi castle was constructed by Ogasawara Tadazane on Mount Akamatsu from 1617 to 1619 to watch over the western lords (daimyo daimio), by the order of Tokugawa Hidetada. The daimyo (daimio) were powerful Japanese feudal lords who—until their decline in the early Meiji period—ruled most of Japan from their vast, hereditary land holdings. Subordinate to the shogun, and nominally to the Emperor and the kuge, daimyo were powerful feudal rulers from the 10th century to the middle 19th century in Japan. In the term, dai means "large", and myo stands for myoden meaning "private land". It is known Miyamoto Musashi helped in building the castle as he was invited by Ogasawara Tadanao to be a "Construction Supervisor". The castle only took one year to complete, which was relatively fast for the time period. This was done so quickly as a result of a 1615 law mandating one castle per clan, so many castles were dismantled and parts of some were used to construct Akashi Castle. The castle was built in Akashi, which was an important strategic point between Osaka and western Japan, where many major tozama daimyo had their feudal estates. Akashi Castle was expected to be a key staging point to stop a hypothetical invasion of Osaka. It measures approximately 11 x 5.75 inches. The picture measures approximately 9.5 x 4 inches, with a caption below. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is unrelated text/photos on the back of the print.
