Description: An original, antique hand coloured etching after the famous satirist artist James Gillray (1756-1815). It is titled 'Opening of the Budget: or - John Bull giving his Breeches to save his Bacon' (Particularly topical currently!).It depicts a group of gentleman from the Treasury holding a large collection sack for money and assuring John that a French invasion is imminent and that the money is needed to protect him. John Bull stands before them and is offering his trousers in order 'to save his bacon' and to save himself for 'being stripped naked by Charley and the plundering French invasioners'. The group stand on a beach adjacent to The Channel, a flag marked 'BREST' visible across the sea. The identities of the individuals are: Charles James Fox is the man by the sea behind the group, William Pitt (Prime Minister) is the man holding the bag and politicians Baron Grenville and Viscount Melville are the two men kneeling behind. Titled below the image and marked 'J Gillray; inv.t'. Originally published by Hannah Humphrey in 1796, however this is a slightly later and smaller version. Gillray's work was much admired and was copied for publication in the periodicals 'London und Paris' and 'The Jacobean Review' however they usually have folds in them which this doesn't so I think this was etched and published by Miller and Blackwood of Edinburgh who published nine volumes of etchings after Gillray from 1824 to 1827. The hand colouring is of the same date. These later impressions do not command the very high value of original Gillrays but are still of great interest and very collectable. In excellent condition and well presented with a white card mount within a dark wood frame. Both the mount and the framre are in excellent condition, the only point to note a tiny tiny mark on the upper left inner edge of the frame, (see sixth photograph above). Glazed and ready to hang. Measures 30.5 x 36cm including the frame, the image only is 14 x 20cm. Postage £4 to mainland UK, £16 to mainland Europe and £26 to the USA.About me - I am a very experienced retailer and am qualified in Art History.
