Nifty really old & rare tin floor toy train or trolley style passenger car wagon with lots of wear but a great classic 1800's toy look. Made by James Fallows & Sons Company from 1870 to 1890's. They made these in various forms & sizes & with different markings (and under a few company names C.B. Porter Co & other). The IXL stamped in some of the metal panels was a play on the words I Excel or I X L. Despite it's wear & tear the train maintains a terrific display pop for early toy collectors. It has a faint lettering on the engine car "Skip" but it's a little tough to make out but that was one of Fallows models. These are made of a light gauge tin with solder tack welds. The wheels are likely iron or steel. There are lots of places where tack welds have separated, lots of dents and scuffs as well. One of the passenger car floors is a wood replacement & all three passenger cars floors can slide in & out. We did not try to repair, clean or alter the old toy, we just left it as found except we did make a few wire connectors for the cars (with a common staple). All of the elements of the pieces attract to a magnet except the smoke stack which is a small wood dowel replacement we assume as the original stack would have been tin as well. We took pictures from all angles & sides, so please review all pictures taken for your consideration and use zoom if needed. We believe this is the complete set from when produced. Often the tender car or a passenger car may be missing. Not sure how to grade an old beauty like this, so we will let buyers decide from pictures. We will say it was well loved by a bunch of kids, but it made it! Some of the larger trains (with 8"-17" Engines) from this era made by Fallows have sold as high as $7,800 and one for $6,000 (the "Flash" model at Bertoia Auction May 2021 & another for $1992 on eBay 9-2021) and some for far less of course depending on size, condition and other. Although the one's noted above were also a little worn, probably in the VG to VG+ range. We found many other sales above $1,000 and under at various auctions, again depending on model, condition and number of cars. One engine car alone sold for over $1,400 a while back, so who knows. Occasionally you will see one sell for much less when a seller does not recognize the maker or age, but that is not common. We have not seen a single Fallows train sell that was Mint or even close to Exceptional, hard to imagine what such a piece may sell for. We are pricing ours at what we feel is fair based on condition and size of toy and since ours has a wood smoke stack replacement. A "Skip" model with 5 pieces (engine car, tender wagon & three open no top cargo cars) sold for $721 on eBay a few years back & is the closest example to ours but that one may have had more damage than ours but we are pricing under that. Let us know if you have questions. We did a ton of digging on this, but do not claim to be perfect. On toys this old, concise info is hard to come by so we had to rely on our antique & collectible pay sites, other auction sites etc to track down what we could. Please Read: We ship with extreme care and all items are fully insured! Of course, there is free local pick up and we can meet to assist if you are near Indianapolis or driving through. We do this often. Signature confirmation on delivery is required, so please plan accordingly. Also, we have discounts with FedEx & eBay on shipping which do not always show up in eBay estimates on shipping. We try to refund what we can when there is a notable difference, but we do not know until we actually process the shipping order.
