Jacques Sultana (1938-2012) « Je peins pour ceux qui voient la différence entre la peinture et la photo » “I paint for those who see the difference between painting and photography” Nu masculin : il faut redécouvrir les tableaux hyperréalistes Of the modern contemporaries of gay painting, he is undoubtedly the most unknown. Unlike Tom of Finland, Pierre et Gilles or James Bidgood, the work of Jacques Sultana did not experience, during the artist's lifetime, the success he might have expected. But several defenders of this painter have come together to give Sultana's paintings the place it deserves in the pantheon of our favorite artists - paintings of genius which, this time, should find an eternal place in the history of queer art. Jacques was an outcast. Le penseur qui regardait les hommes penser | The thinker who watched men think His vision of man is as precise as it is sulphurous. Of a bourgeois family, he was rejected because of his homosexuality. Having lived his entire life in a small Parisian apartment, he spent a large part of his life painting men, most often naked. Through his hyperrealistic painting, he wanted to enter into the intimacy of the men he placed on his canvas. Like a voyeur photographer who wants to capture the perfect shot of masculinity but never too fierce, he depicted moments of life, where flesh, body and sexuality blended with the elements of the decor. For sure, Jacques Sultana loved men, but what he preferred above all was to paint with brushstrokes their thoughts and the moments of floating that accompanied their bodies. Being a great thinker himself, he loved, when he was not painting, to remake the world. Surrounded by his few faithful friends, he was passionate. He dreamed of a better, more humanist world and the aerial eroticism which abounds in his works is certainly the most beautiful example of his dreamy and yet down-to-earth spirit. He left behind a body of work which amazes and which will touch the queer generations who are not afraid of anything for a long time to come. Jacques Sultana mainly represents twenty-something younger men alone, most often naked, in all their erotic and sexual power. If there is only one body on the canvas, all his paintings respond to an outside gaze – that of the painter first, then that of the viewer – who directs the composition as much as the attitude of the model. " Sultana's unexhibited work was rediscovered when a collector contacted Pierre in order to have the paintings appraised. Troubled by the hyperrealism of the paintings, he feared a technical trickery close to retouched photography as they were so realistic. Out of breath after climbing the seven floors, he entered the painter's world: an accumulation of portraits of men. Every wall was covered with them, piles piled up on the red carpeted floor. A revelation. For Jean-Pierre Blanc also, director of the Villa Noailles, a mecca for art in Hyères, Sultana's work is essential. And not only because it shows an erotic representation of the male body. "Of course these images retain a form of carnal fascination, but something else slips in, the solar radiance of youth rubs shoulders with the melancholy of a lost paradise." copyrighted images © jacques sultana | not public domain | no copies COMBINED SHIPPING DISCOUNT, photographs books magazines added at a reduced rate We carry those that we ourselves like and believe in -- that we think will excite, enchant, and endure.
