Gangsters crippled the power house lighting the business district, jammed the main generator and threw the "Loop" into darkness. Thousands had to leave the theatres in darkness and hoodlumism broke out in the streets. Chicago still had the shakes when it woke, white and indignant in the morning. About Author: Jack Lait [1883-1954] was a popular American journalist and leading Chicago newspaper columnist of the 1940s & 50s famous for his "Confidential" books including NEW YORK CONFIDENTIAL, CHICAGO CONFIDENTIAL, WASHINGTON CONFIDENTIAL and USA CONFIDENTIAL. He also wrote several novelizations and screenplays for many popular MGM films including Broadway Melody (1929); The Big House (1930) and most famously The Beast of the City (1932) starring Jean Harlow along with the RKO film Bad Company (1931)
