She was born Ivie Amelia McGuire on June 28, 1881 in Kirksville, Missouri to a wealthy family. Her signature is sometimes mis-read as ‘Joie’ rather than Ivie. She traveled extensively, visiting places all over the world with her family. After high school in 1897, she began her studies in design, the theory of painting, art, and English at the University of Missouri, where she studied for three years. She later entered the School of Fine Arts in St. Louis where she studied to be a painter.
