Description: On offer, we have "Simian Siesta" by American artist Ivan Messenger (1895-1983). The artist has written in pencil both the title, "Ed.35" and his signature. This is his famous circa 1935 cubist style sleeping monkey. On off-white wove paper, this measures 12 3/4" X 9 3/4". I removed this print from its original damaged matte. I saved part of the cardboard backing with the artist's writing "Ivan Messenger Rancho Mirage, Calif." and "Lithograph on Stone $25.00". Research tells me the 1935 $25.00 price would be $572.00 today. About the artist: Ivan Messenger is best known as a lithographer and painter. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1895, he earned an M.A. from Stanford University in 1921. In 1926, he held his first solo exhibition and later taught at San Diego State University and held classes in life drawing in Balboa Park’s Fine Art Gallery. His most productive period was prior to 1945. He was a watercolorist who was equally talented with pastels, crayon, gouache, ink, gesso and oil. He is also known for his paintings of the desert and back country near San Diego. He was a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association, California Watercolor Society. This print in excellent condition. It is bold, clear and clean. There is old tape on the the edges from where it was once in the matte.
