Walker show him wearing his “tanker” jacket with appropriate rank on the shoulder tabs and on his overseas cap. The 8×10 image is signed, ” To Cornelius Greenway, D.D. Fred L. Walker, Major General USA, Commanding 36th (Texas) Division in World War II.” Walker, a highly decorated officer, took the 36th Infantry Division into combat beginning in Italy after a good deal of training in North Africa. The 36th saw heavy fight and while under the command of Lt. Gen Keyes’ IV Corps, and later General Clark’s 5th Army, Walker began to criticize his commanders on strategy. That and his poor health, (he was the oldest division commander in the army at 56 years of age), was later replaced and sent to the states for command the Infantry School. He was decorated with the DSC in September of 1944 for his leadership of the 36th Division. He retired in 1946. Condition is fine. Please refer to the photos for condition and detail.
