This very rare work constitutes a printed collection of 118 emblems or mottos. These emblems became commonly used as markers or models of royal, aristocratic or moral properties, as well as in decorative pattern books applied to various crafts including heraldry, masonry, sculpture, painting, wood engraving or textiles. The 1557 edition has 182 cards as well as a brief universal explanation of the symbol. The new wood blocks used for the engraving could be by Bernard Salomon, who collaborated closely with Jean de Tournes.
