IRWIN EDMAN—Adam, The Baby, & The Man from Mars—1st HC—Popular Philosophy—RARE

Description: • For Your Consideration: • A RARE First Edition in HARDCOVER of: • “ADAM, THE BABY, AND THE MAN FROM MARS” (HOUGHTON MIFFLIN, 1929) (HARDCOVER, First Edition, First Printing) • BY IRWIN EDMAN • “Few persons in our time have offered us such a continuingly satisfying combination of wisdom and wit as did IRWIN EDMAN.”—NEW YORK TIMES (1954) • “A philosopher himself, EDMAN belonged to the order of MONTAIGNE and VOLTAIRE rather than that of KANT and HEGEL, and was known widely for his delightful PHILOSPHER’S HOLIDAY and other books of wit, urbanity and style. He was perfectly capable of systematic philosophy, but his true métier was the informal essay—full of charming anecdote, shrewd observation, and fresh and penetrating speculation…. Still, for some curious reason, many people assume that such a man, such a mind, may not be profound. I have heard professional philosophers and others drag in this tired comment, ‘EDMAN is light and popular; he is not a serious philosopher or scholar.’ This is a facile and, I think, foolish judgment. But a sour puritanical dislike of the light-hearted is a part (thank God, not a decisive part) of the Anglo-American heritage.”—HIRAM HAYDN, FORMER EDITOR, AMERICAN SCHOLAR • “He had the most extraordinary gift for making difficult and abstruse matters clear and simple to the layman.” —IRITA VAN DOREN, FORMER BOOKS EDITOR, NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE • ABOUT THIS TITLE: • “ADAM, the baby, and the man from Mars have always been invoked as the only three unprejudiced observers of the human scene. IRWIN EDWIN, in this book of essays, shows himself a fourth. For it is with a dispassionate understanding and a keen eye that he views the contemporary scene. His book is divided into four groups: The American Scene, Antidotes, Speculations. Toward a Philosophy of Criticism…. MR. EDMAN, a member of the Faculty of Columbia, is the author of HUMAN TRAITS AND THEIR SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE and RICHARD KANE LOOKS AT LIFE.” —THE PUBLISHER • “What MR. EDMAN tries to do in this collection of essays is to call attention to a few of the elements that might go into a new philosophy of life, into the creation of a modern temper less willing to admit defeat than that portrayed by MR. KRUTCH. His tools are the study of such philosophers as SANTAYANA, DEWEY, and WHITEHEAD, a sensitive reading of much modern literature, and the experience of friends, of students, and of his own life. He talks always in terms of relativity; there are no perfectly objective observers, not even ADAM, or the baby, or the man from Mars.... The suggestions that he offers represent a single, carefully considered point of view, but the book is, after all, a collection of essays…. Some are brilliantly analytical, others highly stimulating—and a few, I fear, decidedly commonplace…. [But] whatever his theme may be, MR. EDMAN has stylistic graces that delight the reader.” —GRANVILLE HICKS, THE FORUM (1929) • “The author is intelligent, well- informed, ‘on the side of the angels’.” —THE BOOKMAN (1929) • ABOUT THE AUTHOR: • “In addition to writing philosophical works, IRWIN EDMAN was a frequent contributor to literary magazines such as THE NEW YORKER, THE ATLANTIC MONTHY, THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAIZNE, HARPER’S WEEKLY, COMMENTARY, and HORIZON.”—WIKIPEDIA • ABOUT THE AUTHOR’S “HUMAN TRAITS”: • “For anyone who plans being cast away on the bibliophile’s favorite desert isle, MR. EDMAN’s volume would serve best as a combination source of education, entertainment, and inspiration.” —ROBERT BENCHLEY, NEW YORK WORLD • “To the general reader, it will give a fund of facts and information without which our modern literature must seem a dreary waste.” —DETROIT NEWS • “Exhibits a grasp of cultural depths that is remarkable in so young a man.” —ALLEN SHIELDS, THE JOURNAL OF AESTHETIC EDUCATION (1980) • • For other details about this book, please see below. • TITLE: “ADAM THE BABY AND THE MAN FROM MARS” AUTHOR: IRWIN EDMAN TYPE: HARDCOVER PUBLISHER, LOCALE, & YEAR: HOUGHTON MIFFLIN COMPANY / THE RIVERSIDE PRESS (Cambridge, Massachusetts), 1929 EDITION: First Edition, First Printing* *RE: The publication date of 1929 appears on both the Title & Copyright pages—with no later printings listed.
