Iroquois CORN HUSK Woman doll: Traditional dress - Vintage c 1920-60's

Description: This corn husk doll is a traditional Iroquois doll. She wears traditional clothing - native tanned buckskin dress with fringe, leggings, moccasins, braid ties and headband. There is a smoked deerhide belt. There is beading at front bottom of dress skirt and at front bottom of leggings. Doll's hair appears to be black sheep fleece. She is 7 3/4" above the slice of log with bark left on to which she is affixed. Doll's body is about 1" deep 3" wide at top of arms arm. Stand is 3/4" high - there is a bark on twig inserted into the log slice stand, this goes in back of doll's dress - and that is how she is held upright on the stand. Doll & stand in perfect condition (Stand is smooth sliced, bark on) This doll's head, body and extremities are made of corn husks. As is traditional with most Iroquois dolls - this doll is a "no face" doll - there are legends and stories about the reasons for this - ranging from encouraging imagination to discouraging vanity and pride. The doll was collected by an Iroquois woman sometime between 1920-early 1960's. During that time this woman collected corn husk dolls and bought them at tribal festivals, pow wows etc and some of the dolls were made and given to her by friends and family.
