Back caption reads, "SKELLIG ROCKS are situated about 14kms off Valentia Island.The Great Skellig, largest of the three, is an enormous mass of rock rising sharplyout of the sea to more than 213 metres. On it are the ruins of a settlement built byearly Christian monks: a small ancient church, a larger church of later date (probablytenth century), two oratories, six beehive cells, several burial enclosures, crude crossesand two wells. In former times the Great Skellig was visited by crowds of pilgrims doingpenance. Above 'Christ's Saddle' is a projecting flake of rock, inscribed with a crosswhich pilgrims kissed."
