Original Narrative: On the lower lake of Killarney, in the midst of scenery which neither painting nor language can adequately describe, stands the Castle of Ross; it is traditionally said to have been a strong hold of the O'Donohues, and is remarkable for having been the last fortress which surrendered to the Parliamentary army. Lord Muskerry defended it against an English force, commanded by General Ludlow, attended by Lord Broghill and Sir Hardress Waller, with the utmost firmness, skill, and bravery; nor did it capitulate until Waller, availing himself of the influence of the tradition, which asserted that Ross-Castle would never be taken until vessels of war should appear upon the lake, had sent for gun-boats from Kenmare, which he brought over land and launched. During the Revolution of 1688 Ross-Castle, together with the adjoining mansion-house, was converted into a barrack, and continued to be used as such until within these few years, when it was surrendered to the landlord, Lord Kenmare. The quay serves as a place of embarkation for those who visit the lakes. The Castle, now shrouded with ivy, presents nothing in its architecture which merits particular observation.
