THE Association for the Study of Negro Life and History joins with Publishers Company, Inc., in launching a series of volumes which will treat in detail the cultural and historical backgrounds of Negro Ameri-cans. This association, a pioneer in the area of Negro history, was founded in Chicago on September 9, 1915, by Dr. Carter G. Wood-son, who three years earlier had been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in American History from Harvard University. In 1916, Dr. Woodson began the publication of the quarterly Journal of Negro His-tory. In 1924, Negro History Week was launched, and since that time it has continued on an annual basis in the month of February, falling between the birth dates of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The Negro History Bulletin was first published in 1926 to serve as a liaison between schools, families and teachers in making available little-known facts about Negro life and history. During the fifty vears of its existence, The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History has supported many publications dealing with the contributions of Negro Americans to the growth and development of this country. Dr. Woodson wrote several books which have served as standard texts in schools throughout the nation; and as a result of his scholarship and dedication, others became interested in disseminating factual studies which would put the Negro in true perspective in American history. With this fact in mind, we gratefully acknowledge the contributions of these previous scholars, which have aided us in the preparation of this International Library of Negro Life and History. Our grateful acknowledgment is also expressed to Charles W. Lockyer, President of Publishers Com-pany, Inc., whose challenging approach made possible this library. We cannot acknowledge individually all the contributions made by others, but our gratitude goes also to the institutional staffs of the Library of Congress, the Schomburg Collection of the 135th Street New York Public Library, the Moorland Room of Howard University, the National Library of Medicine, the National Archives and Record Service, the New York Historical Society, the Cincinnati Historical Society and The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, for the use of books, papers and pictures which have made this study possible. It is a well-known fact today that too few Americans are aware that the Negro has a notable history of proud achievement. Because the standard sources of world history have failed to include his contributions, an honest account of the many outstanding roles that Negroes have played in the mainstream of world culture is long overdue. The material in each of these volumes is presented for the purpose of making this knowledge available to the American people.
