Tarkovsky (1932-1986) was a Soviet film director and screenwriter, widely regarded as one of the greatest film directors of all time. His first five films (1962-1974) were produced in the Soviet Union. However, after years of conflict with state film authorities, he left the country in 1974 and made his two final films abroad: Nostalgia (1983) was filmed in Italy and "The Sacrifice (1986) was produced by the Swedish Film Institute. This expensively produced book was produced for an international film festival in 2003. The black numeral 70 on the cover apparently refers to the 70th anniversary of Tarkovsky's birth. This is a rare and unique documentary of the subject's personal and professional life.
