Description: Edward Reginald Kirkness (1900-1979), was known for his unique impressionistic style achieved with short, choppy brushstrokes and his somewhat monochromatic use of color. He often painted in impasto with some amount of applied texture. This painting does not disappoint in all his signature style. He used a limited color palette to tell his story and bring forth his vision of a harbor scene on a dreary day. As his works often depicted scenes of the industrial cities of the north of England, a commercial building is seen on the right side, with other city buildings in the background. Even so, the lonely figure in the rowboat, the crumbling castle-like edifices and the somber tone of the scene give the painting a touch of the romantic. Kirkness wove all the elements of his compositions with monochrome colors to create a rather moody but striking work of art. It is signed, “Kirkness,” in the bottom right corner. It is housed in a simple but elegant turned, wooden and gilded frame that was enhanced with a black line near the edge and hints of black throughout. It is in excellent condition. The frame is also in excellent condition, with only a few minor losses of gilding. It measures 27-¼ inches wide by 23-½ inches high, including the frame. Personal and cashier’s checks also accepted.
