The trial was before a kind of jury consisting of six men with a Major at their head. The culprits were convicted. The evening after this happened, some knocked at the door of the foresaid Major, who made his appearance; as soon as they were able to ascertain his identity, one of them split him down at a stroke with an axe, and laid him dead upon the spot. They then wrote an anonymous letter to Governor Livingston, informing him of the fact, and assuring him that he should soon undergo the same fate, unless he forthwith caused those three prisoners to be discharged. His meek Excellency, who was always as careful as other folks of his own personal safety, thought fit to comply, and the prisoners were emancipated.”.
