The first statue to be moved under the Loggia was Donatello's Judith. In 1554 Benvenuto Cellini's Perseus was placed under the east arch. In 1584 the Judith was moved to make room for Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women. In this work the artist succeeds in an enterprise that Michelangelo had always tried to achieve in marble, and this was a combination of three moving figures. "Giambologna, spurred on by his talent, wished to show the world that he not only knew how to make ordinary marble statues, but working on many together, and the most difficult ones possible, used all his skill to produce nude figures, revealing the weakness of old age, the strength of youth or delicate femininity."
