Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and recently obtained in Tokyo is a vintage ‘Famous Airplanes of the World’ (FAOW) publication: “IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY KAWANISHI H8K EMILY TYPE 2 FLYING BOAT”. The FAOW series has been in print since 1969 and has evolved over the years – changing the number of pages, quality of paper, and frequency of printing (monthly to bi-monthly to irregular). The cover has also changed from landscape to portrait format, and the covers were blue from 1969 to 1979, graph (checkered) beginning in 1979, and then the current black cover beginning in 1986. Through it all, this series offered volumes that focused on a specific aircraft type, or family of aircraft, with Japanese text, lots of photographs, scale line drawings, cut-away drawings, tone profile drawings, cockpit diagrams, close up-detail drawings and often color profiles. This 1975 FAOW on the EMILY is from the most vintage blue cover series and as you can imagine, it is tough to find, even in Japan. The Emily entered production in 1941 and first saw operational use on the night of March 4, 1942 in an attempt at a second raid on Pearl Harbor. Since the target lay out of normal range for the flying boats, this audacious plan involved a refueling by submarine en route at French Frigate Shoals. In this very little-known attack, two H8K1 Emilys actually made it to Oahu and bombed the island with little effect. The improved H8K2 variant increased its defensive armament, earning it the nickname "Flying Porcupine" among Allied aircrews. The H8K2 were an upgrade over the H8K1 by having more powerful engines, slightly revised armament, and an increase in fuel capacity. This was to be the definitive variant, with 112 produced. They were used on a wide range of patrol, reconnaissance, bombing, and transport missions throughout the Pacific war. Nearly 40 examples of a dedicated transport version, the H8K2-L, were also built, capable of carrying 62 troops. Overall, a total of 167 Emilys were produced. This 64 page, 7.25 x 10 inch softcover was published by Bunrindo in 1975; condition is FAIR+/GOOD with moderate shelf wear to the covers – no rips, tears, stains, etc., a solid working copy Note that Over the Blue Horizon ships from the USA with FREE United States Postal Service (USPS) First Class shipping to USA buyers! eBay charges sales tax for certain states; Over the Blue Horizon charges Hawaii residents state general excise tax.
